Beware of Wild Mushroom Food Poisoning

Many cases of food poisoning from eating poisonous mushrooms occur every fall across the country as mushrooms grow in abundance.

To prevent food poisoning from mushrooms, please follow the rules of “do not pick”“do not eat”, “do not sell”, and “do not give to others” when you cannot reliably determine if the mushroom is edible.

Additionally, never eat wild mushrooms that grow on roadsides or in parks, as they can be toxic.

Outbreak of Food Poisoning by Mushrooms

The main symptoms of mushroom food poisoning vary depending on the type and amount of mushrooms consumed, but they include gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, as well as neurological symptoms such as sweating, numbness in the hands and feet, and impaired consciousness, and in severe cases, even death.

How to recognize poisonous mushrooms

It is difficult to recognize poisonous mushrooms, so even those with ample experience can end up with food poisoning from failing to identify them. Foreign nationals who find wild mushrooms growing in Japan that appear similar to those found in their home countries should not collect or eat them.

If You Feel Unwell, Go To A Medical Facility

If you taste a strong bitterness or experience any numbness on your tongue after putting a mushroom you have collected in your mouth, spit it out immediately and seek medical attention if you feel unwell.
